» Filling The Gap is an important educational film. It has the distinction of being an African-American historical film that features little known facts about “people of color” during the ante-bellum period in America.
» Filling The Gap gives viewers an enlightening view of black people in bondage rendering both military and non-combat service in the Civil War. Highly skilled as artisans and craftsmen and ingenious as inventors, African-Americans made great contributions to the early settlement and development of our country.
» Filling The Gap is spectacular in its portrayal of historical characters like Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and others who are less known. This film is significant as a resource in the study of America’s history.

I saw this dvd film at the booth in Olustee battle reenactment in Feb and thought it was a bit expensive. But wanting to support local arts and education, I bought it. At first I thought it was going to be another treatment of black soldiers' contribution to the union war effort, but no! Way more entertaining, profiling the lives of talented and heroic black americans making significant contributions to the greatness of our country. I was moved at several instances in the film and it has inspired me to do further study. Though at first, I balked at the price, I am buying another for a friend.

This film can't be put out there soon enough. A much needed part of our educational system. And bravo to Sojourner Truth! Brilliant job with the "Aint I a woman" speech.

I enjoyed this documentary very much. I am a junior in high school and I'm in Advanced Placement U.S. History. Most of the stories portrayed are ones I've read in depth about. But this time it was a whole different experience by watching what I've learned on screen. It made the stories more personal and real.

Awesome and revealing of the great and significant contributions made by our African-American brothers and sisters and their ancestors, to our great country.
